Common Presentations
Below is a list of common presentations to Dr. Chris. In almost all cases, the key goal is to restore functional capacity (ability to move well), and consider preventive strategies going forwards.
-
Degenerative myelitis (muscle loss with age, also referred to as sarcopaenia).
-
Spinal arthritis (wear and tear)
-
Management of Hip Dysplasia
-
Spinal Disc injury
-
Acute limb paralysis following spinal lesion(e.g. disc injury)
-
Management of knee injury (e.g. cruciate injury, luxating patella) either as a preventive, or post surgical, strategy.
-
Abnormal gait movement (particularly show/performance dogs)
-
Underlying breed-related genetic defects( e.g. hemivertebra in French Bulldogs/Pugs etc).
-
Ongoing spinal management following limb amputation.
-
Acute/chronic neck issues (e.g. trauma, disc, arthritis)
-
Seizures - some cases respond very well, but depends on the mechanism driving the seizures. Often dogs that develop seizures after a head trauma will show the most improvements.
-
Vestibular/balance issues - can sometimes be associated with upper neck problems.
Considerable effort is made to determine if the issue at hand warrants Chiropractic care, or requires referral for further investigation. Dr. Chris has access to Xray/CT facilities through Adelaide Plains Vet if required.
Usually a 2-4 visit trial is sufficient to establish if intervention is justified.
Looking Ahead
A significant number of issues that present are quite preventable. The main problem being that owners often don't realise that their dog's lifestyle can be very high-risk, as far as injury is concerned. This is amplified in certain breed types.
Dr. Chris puts a big emphasis on prevention, and helping owners to understand how to reduce their dog's 'risk profile', which can save thousands in unnecessary surgery.
Dr. Chris firmly believes that our pets should not be considered as 'toys' or 'ornaments' for our entertainment. They are real family members, who need our guidance, rules and boundaries when it comes to having a relatively healthy, trouble free existence.
